Glucomannan Benefits

Despite achievements in treatment modalities and preventive measure, diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate all over the world. Dietary supplements have increasingly become recognized as having a beneficial effect in the treatment and management of diabetes. Dietary and herbal supplements have found its ground amongst these alarming rates.

Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fibre that is made from an underground stem called as konjac. It is a popular natural supplement known to be effective in controlling diabetes. The Results of one such study shows that Glucomannan when taken in small amounts was helpful in stabilizing the blood sugar levels in people diabetes.

Glucomannan also known as Konjac-Mannan (KJM) is a promising alternative therapy for type 2 diabetes. There is a mounting body of evidence that supports that rheologically-selected and highly viscous KJM may play an important role in improving diabetes control and reducing related risk factors such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension, and ameliorating insulin resistance. KJM has proved its ability to modulate the rate of absorption of nutrients from the small bowel and increasing insulin sensitivity.

Used as a therapeutic adjunct, Glucomannan has been shown to alleviate the lipid profile and improve the fasting blood glucose levels of type 2 diabetes. It is increasingly being used as a dietary supplement for diabetes, high cholesterol (blood fats), weight loss, high blood pressure and constipation. It controls diabetes by slowing down the digestion process and the rate of nutrient absorption from the stomach and intestine. It blunts the rise of blood glucose after a meal is taken.

Glucomannan is found to not only reduce the requirement of insulin or hypoglycaemic agents but to also slow down serum cholesterol levels. One report has also suggested that glucomannan can be very helpful in pregnancy-related diabetes. It stabilizes blood sugar in people with the insulin resistance syndrome which is also known as syndrome X. in certain cases it has also been found to have raised HDL, the “good” cholesterol, and lowered LDL, the “bad” cholesterol and the total cholesterol in the body of the patients with syndrome X.

The overall Benefits of Glucomannan are varied and manifold. It can be used to control cholesterol, diabetes, and most importantly help in controlling obesity. When administered on a regular basis it is said to have drastic changes in the blood sugar levels.
