Holiday Beauty Update: Wintergreen Nails

As I gave myself a manicure during this recessionary holiday season, I decided I wanted something more festive for December. With everyone talking about “going green,” and with green as fall/holiday’s trendiest color, I opted with the color green for my nails. Or should I say… wintergreen!

Trend: Turns out that Chanel created a patented Jade nail polish color (no. #407) to resemble a tweed suit in the Fall 2009 fashion collection. As it just came out a couple months ago, most celebs like Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, and other beauty queens have become jaded for Chanel’s nail polish.

Do it Right: Nail polish with bold or trendy colors look best on well manicured nails with short or medium length (most flattering on natural nails). With the green color trend for the fall/holiday season, it is best to use more subtle tones to match with daily outfits and everyday makeup. Don’t go for the dark forest or neon shades… you want your festive hands to look more feminine and chic; not like you got your manicure from a leprechaun or forest ranger.

Check out how choosing the right color for your nail polish can complement most wardrobe color schemes and prints:

Make it your own: Choose your own wintergreen. Your nail polish should be a neutral tone that coordinates with your holiday wardrobe and will not attract too much attention. From denim foundations and basic blacks, to sparkly sequin pieces, this wintergreen shade should be a complementing beauty accessory. I chose a light green shade with a hint of gold from the drugstore. Remember that to make your polish last longer, you should use a base coat and top coat (when using cheaper polish, if you do not use a base coat your nail can turn a gross yellow color). Keep in mind that if you want your nails to match the color on the bottle, then multiple coats are needed. If you can’t seem to find the right shade, go for the layering affect. Mix colors together, or choose a flat green and layer with a gold or silver shimmery polish. Picking the right shade of green will help make your nails look more like a fashion statement than an actual “green thumb”.
